Re: A good way to cut down on obesity?

    A few thoughts:

If a tax is put into place it's not coming off, the government if anything will increase it not decrease it or remove it. Secondly, people have no problem taxing things that wont bother them, it's human nature. People can argue all types of things, me drinking a soda can cause me to be obese and cause insurance premiums to go up. At the same time, I may work my tail off while you sit on your tail and do nothing. Who contributes/hurts society more? Tax video games if a kid gets a copy of Grand Theft Auto he will shoot us all up, so raise the tax so people can't afford them. Better yet, raise the price of dog food through higher taxation, do people really need dogs? In fact, that is what I support I don't own animals so lets do that. It amazes me how people are blinded by stuff that just do not simply bother them but when the shoe is on the other foot they will have a heart attack, with or without fatty foods.

Seriously, be preparded to pay higher taxes. We are going to have to pay for all of this at some point and that time is coming. I wouldn't be surprised if the tax burden on citizens in this nation didn't double over the 10-20 years.

"CHICAGO - U.S. researchers estimate that an 18 percent tax on pizza and soda can push down U.S. adults' calorie intake enough to lower their average weight by 5 pounds per year."
Hey, if I lived 15 more yearson this, I'd scale out at 105. These figures must right.

When my dog gets public funds, tax him some more. The dog tag and rabies shots are already tax.

Re: A good way to cut down on obesity?

IMHO these "Sin" taxes are honestly just another avenue to pump more money into the Government coffers

As someone already stated "will diet sodas be exempt from the tax?" IMHO NO because they contain Aspertain which may cause other health issues.......Then we will need to tax Juice based on the high sugar/calorie content......then a Milk tax just because.....then a water tax because bottled water is bad for the environment....then on Well water owners because there water quality may be iffy and finally tap water because of the sudden uptick in water usage LOL

Here are my thoughts....IF the Government REALLY wanted to find a way for chunky people to slim down they would make gym memberships tax deductible stop subsidizing corn and subsidize more leafy green Vegetables (Making them cheaper) and for the morbidly obese promote beratic surgery (Make it a tax rebate thing kind of like what they do not for appliances)

Government assistance for animals is already here spuds. I don't care for animals, why should my tax dollars go to save them?

Show me where to sign my dog up, if you don't mind. Your tax dollars don't do **** for my dog. You were talking about pet owners, I'd have to see this in writing to think it was real. The SPCA might get some funding, but they don't really belong in the pet owners class.

Count me in too by golly! All these years I've handled my own dog food, vaccinations, wellchecks, emergency care, toys, supplies, etc. out of my own pocket. Being a member of a state registered animal rescue I'd like to know how I missed out on this assistance!

Surely folks dont think that county animal shelters counts as government assistance for pet owners. Even then, a lot of counties aren't fortunate enough to have a shelter like Wise County has. If anyone debates that or doesn't understand the funding of shelters or what goes into them holler at me and we'll review!
    You'll shoot your eye out.

Maybe some of us are cheating on our taxes and counting the rebate as gov funds for pets?

Again, this wasn't a gov. proposal, this was another study and was proven to work actually. This isn't really a sin tax and I doubt this would lead to a chain of products being taxed like you said. Yes, this would be used to raise money, this would just be a addon to it, but it would still work. And my stance still hasn't changed on a soda tax of some sort along with others. The tax credits on gym memberships wouldn't have that much of an effect at all, it wouldn't free up any time for people that don't have the time and wouldn't make anyone any less lazy for those who do have the time.

It is the carrot and the stick argument you prefer the stick and I the carrot. I do not see how you seem to think that a new tax would change behavior but a tax credit would not

By the way i do NOT think that a soda tax will cut ANY consumption at all.......Up until last year the Soda machine at work cost $1 the company that refills the machines jacked up the price to $1.10 for about a week there was a big drop off in the number of soda drinkers here but within a month it was like the price had never changed at all

Would a Soda Tax raise money? YES and if that is a legit goal go for it......Would a Soda tax cut into demand? NO not at the 4-10 cent level IMHO it would take a shocking rate hike to change habits long turn (50-75 cents?)
